Speech Development in Toddlers
How should my 2 year old be communicating? At the age of two, typically your child should be expressing 50 different words, she should be using new words regularly and using 2 word phrases frequently with occasional 3 word phrases. A typically developing two year old should also be able to follow a 2 step related command, identify pictures when named and choose a few familiar objects on request. How a child plays is also an important piece of development. A two year old child will typically put toys away on request, stack and assemble toys and objects and use two toys together in pretend play. If you have concerns about your child’s communication development, don’t hesitate to seek intervention. Within the United States, any child from birth to age three can receive early intervention if he or she is demonstrating a delay. Early Intervention makes a big impact and the support and services you can receive only support families.
